Salary Scale - Salary will be in line with the IUA postdoctoral salary scale up to a max of point 5 (dependant on experience of the recruited candidate) €38,632 - €43,410

Location - Dundalk Institute of Technology, Ireland

Duration - 36 months subject to continued funding by the HEA Technology University Transformation Fund

We are seeking to recruit a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher with a background in Digital Health and either Data Science/AI or Human Computer Interaction experience, whose primary role will be to apply for funding opportunities with a view to becoming an independent researcher and Principal Investigator within NetwellCASALA.

This is a unique opportunity for a postdoctoral researcher to secure their own research funding, as Principal Investigator and advance their career. The successful candidate will join a well established multidisciplinary research and development team based in Dundalk Institute of Technology working on applied age-friendly health and wellbeing technology solutions to support older adults. NetwellCASALA works closely with members of the community, health services, industry and academic partners to actively translate ideas into practical solutions that improves the lives of older people and those who care for them, whilst also creating new business opportunities and informing public policies. NetwellCASALA is currently involved in a number of EU and national funded projects. NetwellCASALA also operates a Living Lab and is a member of the European Network of Living Labs. Staff in NetwellCASALA have access to a wide array of training courses to support career development and progression.

The role includes, but is not limited to, the following:

  • Develop a 3-year funding strategy in collaboration with NetwellCASALA’s director.
  • Identify and participate in relevant networking opportunities, including for example, COST Action Networks, and join suitable EU funding consortia.
  • Seek out funding opportunities and aim to recruit postgraduate students.
  • Write and submit grants (as Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator) as an individual researcher and/or within consortia.
  • Work with Principal Investigators within NetwellCASALA by contributing to grants.
  • Contribute to research activities within the centre, relevant to data science / HCI.
  • Contribute to reports and publications on the centre’s research.
  • Attend project meetings as required.
  • Undertake any other related research activities as required.

Essential Criteria

  • Hold a PhD or have equivalent experience in Digital Health, and either Data Science / biomedical engineering / AI or Human Computer Interaction (or related disciplines).
  • Two to three years prior postdoctoral experience.
  • Knowledge of the principles underpinning successful grant application with a record of securing grant funding.
  • Evidence of a strong publication track record in line with experience.
  • Commitment to collaborative and interdisciplinary research and proven record of working with team members and postgraduate students to help build their research skills and knowledge.
  • Experience of working on European or similar large-scale collaborative projects.
  • Knowledge of funding landscape, including national, cross-border and European.
  • For a HCI candidate, experience in designing digital applications and conducting user research including conducting interviews, focus groups, co-design workshops and usability testing.
  • For a data science candidate, experience with analysis of digital health data sets, such as biomechanics and gait analysis. Experience in R or similar language. Experience in visualisation, feature extraction, machine learning and classification.
  • Analytical skills, including qualitative and quantitative.
  • Skills in both verbal and written communication, including proficiency in academic writing and public presentations.
  • Works proactively and demonstrates enthusiasm for research and a desire for career progression.
  • Driven, outgoing, capable of networking and forming collaborations.
  • Ability to lead a research project.

Desirable Criteria

  • Has a good network of potential national and European collaborators, including industry collaborators.
  • Experience in working with older adults.
  • Experience in conducting and evaluating home-based studies of digital health technology.
